Newcastle Hospitals Charity backs new treatment to help patients with swallowing difficulties

Patients with swallowing difficulties are set to benefit from new treatment to improve their quality of life, thanks to Newcastle Hospitals Charity support.Speech and Language therapists at Newcastle Hospitals are being trained to deliver a new treatment called Phagenyx.

As an evidence-based effective treatment for swallowing difficulties, Phagenyx provides sensory stimulation to the throat to promote rapid swallow recovery post-stroke and critical care.

Using a single-patient use, trans-nasal catheter, electrical stimulation is delivered to the inside of the throat using a single-patient use, trans-nasal catheter.

Swallowing difficulties, known as dysphagia, affects more than 50% of patients post-stroke and up to 62% of critical care patients, but it’s hoped that the new treatment will make a positive difference in Newcastle.

Alison Davison, speech and language therapist, said: “I want to say a huge thank you to Newcastle Hospitals Charity for their support so we can provide Phagenesis treatment for patients with severe swallowing difficulties, known as dysphagia.

“This is going to make an enormous difference to our patients here at Newcastle Hospitals.”
