Supporting the work and the patients in our hospitals

More than a quarter of our income comes from gifts in wills and they make an extraordinary difference to the work in our hospitals.

Most recently, we have supported the purchase of a new surgical robotics system, two private havens for families of patients receiving palliative care as well as a research institute for nurses, midwives, health professionals and a haematology clinical trial fellow.

When you include a gift in your will you are saying a forever thank you that will help us to support the patients, staff and wider communities of the North East.

Kay and Andy Brown made a decision to make a gift in their Wills, following major surgery that impacted them both. Appreciating the treatment they received, Kay and Andy have decided to pledge a gift for medical equipment for children and young people.

Legacy case study

Caroline Jennings story

Susan Caroline Jennings (nee Edmundson and known as Caroline) now lives in North Norfolk, but was born in Corbridge and is very proud to be from the North East. Susan decided to leave a gift in her Will to Newcastle Hospitals Charity due to her long family association with the city’s hospitals.

Caroline takes up the story “At the age of two I developed Tuberculosis and was treated at both the RVI and the Fleming Children’s Hospital. Those hospitals saved my life.

“I have so many connections with the Newcastle hospitals. My Uncle Freddie (Frederick Miller) worked at the RVI as Consultant Paediatrician in Child Health and my Aunt was a Doctor for the Premature Baby Unit. I myself worked as a nurse at the General Hospital, Newcastle in the Blood Transfusion Service and in 1962, I met my husband Roy Jennings who was a Dental Student at Durham University (now the Newcastle Medical School).

“Roy and I we were married in Whitley Bay and after 61 years of happy marriage, Roy died last July 2024. That’s why I would like to make a gift to the heart unit at the RVI in my Will.”
